The Department of Foreign
Languages and Literature (FLLD) was established in 1955, the same year in
which Tunghai University was established. Since that time both the
University and the FLLD have grown much larger. Forty years ago the FLLD
had about 15 Majors Program students and just a few teachers; now there
are approximately 400 students majoring in English, 3000 students taking
Freshman English for Non-majors, 46 full-time faculty, and 49 part-time
faculty in the department. In addition to courses in English language,
literature, and culture, the FLLD offers language courses in German,
French, and Spanish; these courses are open to all students at Tunghai
University. The Department reaches out to students outside Tunghai
University through its Intensive English Program (IEP), and through its
participation in a variety of teacher-training programs. Starting in
the fall of 2000, the FLLD offers an M.A. program that focuses on Teaching
English as a Foreign Language.
The main goals of the FLLD, as
stated in the Department Charter, are as follows:
The Tunghai Foreign Languages
and Literature Department, through the study of Western languages and
literatures, aims to help students discover more about themselves and the
world, become more able to explain themselves and their cultures, and gain
more control over their futures in an increasingly multilingual and
interdependent world. The administrators and teachers of the
Department thus work with the students in a cooperative effort, seeking to
meet the demands and grasp the opportunities of the global cultural and
economic community of which they are all sustaining members. The
Department pursues this vision through the development of appropriate
curricula, teaching methodologies, and class materials, and through the
processes of collaboration, consultation, and review that sustain a
professional, scholarly community. |

論文 Senior
Thesis
A
thesis is a comprehensive and thoroughly researched essay presented by a
candidate for an academic degree as evidence of his or her knowledge of
and research in a particular subject of field of study. All Majors Program
students are encouraged to consider writing a senior thesis during their
final year of study at Tunghai. The benefits of doing so are manifold, as
a thesis can help one accomplish the following:
• Increase one's
expertise in a particular field. • Improve thinking, writing, and
research skills. • Conclude one's studies at Tunghai on a high
note. • Prepare oneself thoroughly for further study in graduate
school.
A
wide range of topics is available for consideration:
1. Literature:
the topic could fall within the realm of comparative literature studies
(e.g., an East-West topic), or the study of a national literature (e.g.,
British or American), or the topic could focus on the study of particular
authors, genres, periods and movements, themes and motifs, literary
criticism, Cultural Studies approaches to literature, etc. 2.
Linguistics: sociolinguistic approaches seem to be especially relevant and
were used in a successful thesis several years ago, but almost any other
approach or topic could be explored. 3. Teaching English as a Foreign
Language: language acquisition, teaching composition, teaching listening
skills, film or television in the language classroom, etc. 4. Other
topics: e.g., translation studies, feminism, topics bringing together
literature and other arts (film, music, etc.), and so
forth.
Generally speaking, preparation for thesis-writing begins in
the second semester of the third year of study. During this semester, a
student who is interested in writing a thesis should contact a teacher who
could function as the advisor. The advisor helps the thesis-writer define
the topic and create an initial bibliography of basic reading materials
which the writer will study over the summer vacation. In the first
semester of the fourth year of study, the thesis-writer continues to
develop and refine the topic, outline, and rough drafts. The final draft
of the thesis should be completed during the second semester of the senior
year, at which time the thesis-writer may register for a 2-credit thesis
course. When completed, the thesis will be reviewed by the advisor and one
other faculty member. One corrected copy should then be submitted to the
FLLD Student Reading Room, and another copy should be given to the Tunghai
Main Library.
Please keep in mind that asking a faculty member to
serve as a thesis advisor is a request for a considerable investment of
time and effort from that teacher. Therefore, a thesis-writer should be
serious about the project, and willing to persist until a high-quality
thesis has been completed.
All students are invited to examine the
senior theses in the FLLD Student Reading Room and the Main Library. These
works demonstrate that Tunghai students can tackle complex projects and
write excellent theses. The FLLD faculty hopes that all students will be
inspired by this earlier work, and will produce many new theses every
year. |

外文系學生選課須知 FLLD
Registration Policies
The following policies have been set by the FLLD
Majors Program. For policies set by the Studies Office, please see the
relevant publications issued by that office.
1. Freshman English
for Majors. First-year students are given an English-language placement
test before the beginning of the first semester. This test includes both
the Placement Test given to all first-year students in the University and
an oral placement test designed especially for FLLD Majors. After the
test, the students are divided into different sections for "Freshman
English for Majors" (FEM). Some of the sections are designated for the
one-year FEM program; other sections are designated for the two-year FEM
program. Students who have been placed in the two-year program must take
Directed English (a two-credit, two-semester course) in their second year
of study, unless they qualify for admission to the one-year program at the
end of the first semester of study. (Please see the relevant teachers for
further information.)
2. Comp/Oral sectioning. At the beginning of
the fall semester, the Department assigns each first-year student to a
section of "Composition I / Oral I / Reading", each second-year student to
a section of "Composition/Oral II", and each third-year student to a
section of "Composition/Oral III". These section-assignments are made on a
random basis, in consultation with the relevant Course Coordinator as
needed. If for some reason a student wishes to change from one section to
another, that student must get permission from both of the teachers
involved. It is the policy of the Department to ensure that the sections
of Comp/Oral classes are balanced, i.e., that the different sections of
the same course each have the same (or nearly the same) number of
students.
3. Course registration. After the section lists have been
posted, each student is responsible for completing the registration
procedures established by the Studies Office.
4. Comp/Oral in
sequence. Students must complete and pass the Comp/Oral classes in
sequence (Comp/Oral I, then Comp/Oral II, then Comp/Oral III).
5.
Comp/Oral "double pass" rule. When repeating a semester of Composition II,
Oral II, Composition III, or Oral III, a student must attend both the
Composition and Oral courses, and complete all work assigned by the
teacher, even though a grade will be given only in that subject which the
student has previously failed.
6. Failed courses. According to
University rules, a student whose first-semester grade in a year-long
course is below 50 may not continue taking the course in the second
semester. See below for Department rules regarding failed courses.
6.1. Students whose first-semester grade in a Majors Program
required language course (FEM, Listening, Comp/Oral I, Comp/Oral II,
Comp/Oral III) is below 60 may not continue taking that course in the
second semester.
6.2. Students whose first-semester grade in any
Majors Program course other than the required language course is between
50 and 59 may continue to take the course in the second
semester
6.3. A student who fails a fourth-year required course
must re-take that course at Tunghai in order to graduate.
7.
Application and registration for seminars. In order to take a particular
seminar, students must complete the application procedure that is held at
the end of each semester (for seminars to be offered in the following
semester). After the lists of students admitted to seminars have been
posted, the students themselves are responsible for completing the
registration procedures established by the Studies Office. 8. Elective
courses. FLLD Majors may count any elective course offered by the
University toward the total number of credits needed for graduation,
except for the following: a. courses in Western literature or languages
offered by another department. b. General Elective courses in English
(English electives for non-majors).
Starting from the fall, 2005
freshman class, FLLD majors should complete at least 22 credit-hours of
elective courses offered by the FLLD, that number to include Introduction
to Linguistics (6-credit required elective) and at least two seminars
(usually 2 credits each).
9. Credit for second/third foreign
language. FLLD Majors are not required to take a second foreign language,
but if they do so they must complete at least two years (12 credits) in
order to receive any credit for this subject. A student who passes the
first year of a second foreign language but does not take or does not pass
the second year of the same language will not be permitted to count the
six first-year credits toward the total number of credits needed for
graduation. However, students who have completed two years of a second
foreign language may, if they so choose, take the first year of a third
foreign language, and in this case the six credits earned in the third
foreign language will be counted toward the total needed for
graduation.
10. Second foreign language policy for freshmen. All
FLLD freshmen, no matter how high their score on the English Placement
Exam, must take Freshman English for Majors. However, FLLD freshmen who
have scored in the top 10% of the English Placement Exam may, if they
wish, take another foreign language in addition to Freshman English for
Majors.
Students who wish to take another foreign language in
their freshman year should be aware that this will constitute a
significant addition to their course-load, especially in the second
semester.
11. Exceptions. Exceptions to any of the rules listed
above may be granted only by the Department Chair, and are possible only
in extremely unusual cases. |

Double-Major Entrance Exams 1. Introduction The FLLD admits
double-major students once a year during the first semester of each
academic year. Students wishing to pursue a double major in the FLLD must
register with the Studies Office and participate in the entrance exams
organized by the Department.
Small class size and attention to the
linguistic and intellectual development of individual students are special
features of the FLLD. In view of this, only a very limited number of
double-major students can be admitted every year and the entrance exams
are therefore bound to be very competitive. Students will be selected the
basis of the following criteria: English language proficiency (in both
written and oral communication); performance in general education courses
and one’s original department course, interest in foreign literatures,
linguistics, and culture; motivation to enter the FLLD; and potential as
an FLLD student.
Double-major students must consult the FLLD Chair,
their advisor (導師), and other teachers frequently regarding their
coursework and other aspects of their studies in this
department.
2. Procedure 2.1 September (to be
announced) Students should register with the Studies Office and the
FLLD, fill out the necessary forms, and provide a copy of their
transcripts.
2.2 September ( be announced) Students take an
English proficiency test and a short composition test. If they have a
class conflict that prevents them from attending the regular scheduled
exam, they must contact the FLLD BEFORE the exam to arrange anther exam
time.
2.3 September (to be announced) The list of students who
pass the written exam will be posted on the FLLD bulletin board. The
students who pass the written exam will be interviewed.

admits transferred students once a year during the second semester of each
academic year. Students wishing to transfer to major in the FLLD must
register with the Studies Office and participate in the entrance exams
organized by the Department.
Small class size and attention to the
linguistic and intellectual development of individual students are special
features of the FLLD. In view of this, only a very limited number of
transferred students can be admitted every year and the entrance exams are
therefore bound to be very competitive. Students will be selected the
basis of the following criteria: English language proficiency (in both
written and oral communication); performance in general education courses
and one’s original department course, interest in foreign literatures,
linguistics, and culture; motivation to enter the FLLD; and potential as
an FLLD student.
Transferred students must consult the FLLD Chair,
their advisor (導師), and other teachers frequently regarding their
coursework and other aspects of their studies in this
department.
2. Procedure 2.1 May (to be announced) Students

外文系圖書館及學習資源介紹 FLLD Library
Resources The FLLD has its own library including two computer
rooms, and a reading room, each with collections tailored to the needs of
FLLD student users. These facilities are open only to Major Program
students in the Department of Foreign Languages and students enrolled in
the second foreign language courses offered by the Department of Foreign
Languages. The library is open for over 50 hours each week during the
semester, except for the mid-term and final exam weeks. Students should
leave their book-bags in the wooden shelves next to the main entrance,
but, for security reasons, should keep any valuables in their possession.
Also, no food or drink is allowed in the FLLD Library.
圖書館開館時間 FLLD
Library Schedule Monday-Friday: 8:00 a.m.-12 noon 1:30-5:00
p.m. 6:00-9:00 p.m. Closed on Saturday and Sunday.
1. 多媒體資源室
Multi-media Room Thirty-three computers are available for the FLLD
students to use. There is also an extensive range of applications
software; however, students may only use software programs installed by
the department. In other words, students are not allowed to run any
programs from their own floppy disks or CD disks. Also, students may not
delete or alter software installed on the computer hard drives. Students
who damage hardware or software will be required to pay for that damage.
A xerox machine is placed in L211 to help students print their papers
or documents. Students may also use the xerox machine in the multi-media
room to make photo copies. Students asked to pay NT$100 registration fee
to cover the cost paper and toner.
2. 閱讀室 Student Reading Room
The Student Reading Room has recently been extended and renovated. The
main purpose of the reading room is to provide students a quiet reading
environment and access to a collection of reference works. It is not a
full-service lending library. Students are encouraged to use the wealth of
information available in the Tunghai Main Library for research projects,
and to ask the staff on duty for help in getting the most benefit from the
resources available.
3. 其他相關資源 Other Since CD-ROM, Email, and
Internet are recent technologies, the legal and ethical standards
governing their use are still being developed. All users of the
Department's computer lab are expected to adhere to the highest ethical
standards when working in the lab. Software piracy, the invasion of
privacy, the theft of confidential information, the destruction or
manipulation and other actions which may be considered unethical and/or
illegal will be considered due causes for disciplinary action by the
Department administration and may lead to a student's dismissal from the
department. |
